About Lecale ASC
Lecale ASC trains in Down Leisure Centre, Downpatrick and is part of the Swim Ulster and Swim Ireland families. It is a competitive swimming club which is open to swimmers aged 6 and upwards. Open trials are held each September for potential new members.
Membership fees for the year must be paid in full in September.
Lecale ASC aims to foster enjoyment of competitive swimming and to improve the stroke technique and stamina for all members. The club offers opportunities for competitive swimming through involvement in the Provincial Towns' League, Forest Feast Aquasprint League and Swim Ulster and other external meets.
Our Club Constitution was revised in 2016 to reflect new Swim Ireland guidance published in 2016. You can access a copy here.
Our Management Committee
In line with our Constitution, our Management Committee is the body elected by club members (elections take place each year at our AGM in June) for the management of the business and affairs of the club.
The Management Committee meets formally at least three times per year (often more frequently). The Club Secretary circulates points of note from meetings of the Management Committee to all members within 14 days of the date of the meeting.
Under Swim Ireland rules, members may only be elected to the Management Committee for a maximum period of 4 years.
Our elected members for 2018-19 are:
Michael Burke Chair
Gerry Colgan Vice Chair and Gala Secretary
Barry Nay Secretary and Communications
Ann George Treasurer
Paul Naughton Member

The Management Committee also includes an appointed Club Children’s Officer (CCO) whose role includes a focus on the safety and wellbeing of our younger members and ensuring they have a voice in the running of the club. The CCO is Kirstie McAllister.
Our Management Committee is supported by other volunteers who play an important leadership role in the club. The roles which report to the Committee include:
Membership Secretary: Kelly Edgar
Assistant CCO: Katrina Godfrey
Assistant Gala Secretary: Charlene Mason
PTL and Aquasprints Gala Organisers/Team Managers:

Please email email@example.com to contact committee members or speak to us in person on Friday nights.
Our Head Coach is Brendan Mulholland. He is supported by coaches Eamonn Magee, Sophia Cross and Mark Millar and swimming teachers Philip McAleenan and Jonathan Hamilton-Cooper. Supply Level 2 (fully qualified) swim teachers are Keeva Naughton, Jamie Hamilton and Amy Godfrey. Level 1 qualified teachers can also work on poolside.
Where space allows, senior members may volunteer as poolside helpers if undertaking Duke of Edinburgh award or Millennium Volunteers award. Poolside helpers are encouraged to take the Swim Ireland Level 1 Teaching Aquatics Course.
Squad Structure and selection criteria
Our girls’ and boys’ gala squads are structured by year of birth in accordance with the age groups for the Provincial Towns League (PTL) (these span two year groups).
The A and B squads are each made up of the top 10 ranked girls and top 10 ranked boys in the relevant age groups. Rankings are calculated on fastest officially recorded times in the previous season across all 4 strokes over a 50m distance. Because they are bigger and faster, numbers in the C and D squads are restricted to 32 swimmers (again the top ranked swimmers in each age group and gender). An extra level of fitness and commitment is expected from gala squad swimmers and they also train on Sundays and on Monday and/or Tuesday nights. Gala squad swimmers are also expected to attend Swim Ulster Skills, Development or Qualifying Meets.
Friday night lanes:
7pm – 8pm: Lanes 1 -4 (A and B squads)
8pm-9pm: Lanes 1-4 (C and D squads)
Swimmers who have demonstrated talent and potential and who are working to improve their technique and speed or who want to swim for fitness.
Swimmers in these squads can move into the gala squad if they meet the criteria and can also be called up to swim in competitions.
Friday night lanes:
7pm – 8.30pm Learner Pool
7.Pm -9.15pm Lane 5
9pm – 9.45pm All lanes
If spaces permit, development squad swimmers may be invited to take part in an additional session run most Sundays from 1pm-2pm
The Aquasprint League provides an opportunity for competitive swimming for our younger swimmers aged between 9 and 12 years over a 25m distance. There are four age groups based on year of birth (2009, 2008, 2007 and 2006). Our Aquasprint squad includes those A and B gala squad swimmers in the appropriate age groups as well as swimmers from the Development Squad who the coaches have identified as ready for competitive swimming and having the potential or likely to benefit from the opportunity to take part in competitions against other clubs.
All members train on Friday night in age group/ability slots from 7pm - 9.45pm in the following lanes.
L1 - L4 - 7pm - 8pm: 'A & B' gala squad
L1 - L4 - 8pm - 9pm: 'C & D' gala squad
L5 - 7pm - 9.10pm: 30/40min training sessions for Junior Development Squad (primary school age).
L1 to L4 - 9.00pm - 9.45 Senior Development Squad (post-primary school age)
Extra training session on Sundays from 1.10pm - 2pm (alternate Sundays October-March) Places limited.
Gala Squad additional training:
Monday nights 7.00pm - 8.00pm for A and B groups (20 places available in total).
Monday nights 8.00pm - 9.15pm for C and D groups. (20 places available in total).
Tuesday nights 7.00pm - 8.15pm (16 places available in total)
Tuesday nights 8.15pm - 9.30pm (16 places available in total)
The Tuesday sessions are for C/D group swimmers. Younger swimmers with particular talent who the coaches determine require this training may also be invited.
Because we have such limited pool time, the Monday and Tuesday training sessions are by invitation only, with selection based on merit and as determined by the coaching team.
Eamonn has developed a set of training sessions for use during the holidays. These are mainly suitable for older club members but may be tailored to younger swimmers too. To download click here.
