If you want a break from the sun, the BBC has excellent coverage of all the swimming heats, semis and finals in the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Watch out for Northern Irish swimmers Sycerika McMahon (Leander/Texas A&M), Rachel Bethel (Lisburn), Gemma Kane (Bangor), David Thompson (Invictus/Loughborough University), Curtis Coulter (Ards), Danielle Hill (Larne), Conor Munn (Ards), Jordan Sloan and Bethany Firth (Ards).
Past Lecale member Emma Sharkey is in the triathlon this morning. Sycerika McMahon, Jordan Sloan and the NI Womens 4 x 100m freestyle team relay have all made semis/finals this evening. Lecale swimmer Daniel Molloy joined over nine hundred swimmers from all over Ireland for the Irish Age Group Championships. The top tier of Irish swimming talent, including Commonwealth swimmers Bethany Carson, Danielle Hill, Curtis Coulter and Irish Olympian Barry Murphy, were also joined by swimmers from all over the UK, Germany, Abu Dabai and South Africa.
With today's finals still to to come, Ulster swimmers have had considerable success so far. Ards, Lisburn, Bangor, Banbridge, Lurgan, Larne and Olympia have won six gold, seven silver and seven bronze individual medals and at least four relay team medals in total. A just reward for swimmers who have committed to an average weekly training time of between twelve and twenty hours. Most notable of the results came from 14 year old Conor Ferguson from Larne. Conor's 57.96 100m backstroke time broke the Ulster record of 59.68, set by Curtis Coulter in 2012, aged seventeen, and leaves Conor just a stroke away from the Irish U19 record of 56.62. Daniel took 24 seconds off his 400m freestyle yesterday finishing in 5:17.14 and today finished just 0.78S outside his 200m backstroke PB in a time of 2:39.09. It was a great experience to be part of a meet of this standard and hopefully there'll be more Lecale qualifiers next year, however Lecale swimmers would require a huge increase in the amount of pool time they have to have a realistic chance of being a serious competitors.
