A Guinness is taking place in Camlough lake, Co Armagh, starting on the 9th of September 2009 to run until the target distance is reached which is 500 kilometres. It will take around 9-10 days to complete. The event is a relay swim and is continuous through day and night and will need as many experienced open water swimmers as possible to take part in order to reach the target and break the existing record.
An age limit of 14 years and older has been put in place, however a younger swimmer who is deemed competent by the event committee may apply to take part and will be assessed prior to the event.
A rota of swimmers will be drawn up to cover the time frame of 10 days.Swimmers who would like to take part must be able to swim 1,500 mts in under 40 minutes and for those stronger faster swimmers the time frame of 3,000 mts in an hour has been set.
THE EVENT
Will be launched in Carrickcruppen GAC on the 1st Sept at 7pm and registration will take place on the night or alternately email [email protected]for registration and more details.
The event itself will start at 6pm on the 9th Sept at the lake. This is a bone fide attempt to break a world record in this part of the world so as many swimmers as possible are needed and your help will be very much appreciated. We will also need an army of volunteer non swimmers who will be invaluable in helping carry out a great number of shore jobs that need to be done like witnessing the event, taking photos, marshalling and keeping written records, experienced time keepers and good tea/ coffee makers are also going to prove invaluable. The old story is, many hands make light work. So come along to registration on the 1st of September and give us an idea of the number we have to swim and help out. You will be able to ask all those questions that are running around in your head and fill in what time frame suits you.
Your help in raising the profile of this event will be very much appreciated. Please pass this on to other swimmers and friends you know that will get involved that I don't have contact details for and
HELP MAKE THIS HAPPEN
Many thanks,
